What do you love about your job?
I love being allowed to participate in another’s journey towards personal growth. It is a privilege and an honor. As a counselor, I do not have a particular population that I enjoy more than another. I do not specialize but individualize treatment for each individual. The most reward is found working with children as change is demonstrated so quickly. Within a month, the parents realize that the child who was oppositional and defiant is now regularly exhibiting 80% or more of the behaviors they desire to see.
What or who inspired you to start your own business?
After serving as an executive director for a local mental health agency, I longed for the ability to see clients when and how it worked best for them. Sometimes, that has meant seeing clients without the ability to pay. Deciding to go into private practice was the best decision I ever made. My schedule is flexible, and I am not bound by any rules and regulations except those of my profession.
Describe your most memorable project.
As I have been in the field for over 20 years now, I have been blessed to see positive outcomes on many occasions. The most touching are the teens now grown who call or e-mail me to say how much having a supportive person in their lives meant to them. Then, there was another time I opened my office door to see a former client proudly displaying her college graduation diploma. She told me that without my encouragement, she would never have accomplished this goal. The key was having someone believe in her. Praise does not come higher than that.
